Why Québec ?

James Bay is in the process of developing a new world class mining camp with many new discoveries in gold, diamond, base metal and uranium.

James Bay was for a long time considered virgin territory with little or no mining potential because of its remoteness but today it is considered to be one of the most promising areas in North America. Since Virginia made its discovery of the Éléonore deposit the region has become the most active exploration area in Quebec. Who knows, this area could perhaps become more prosperous than the legendary Abitibi region!

The land

As a result of surveys carried out in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 Quebec was ranked by the Fraser Institute as being one of the best territories in the world to explore and develop mines. Quebec is renowned for the production of precious metals, common metals, and industrial minerals and ranks among the main mineral producers in the world and is among the top ten most explored areas in the world. Despite this, over two-thirds of the land remains partially explored or completely virgin.

In Quebec, over 90% of the subsoil is made up of precambian rocks, a strong geological setting known for gold, iron, copper, zinc and nickel deposits.

Pro-mining Quebec

Quebec, noted for exceptional mining potential, also offers political stability, pro-industry mining laws and one of the best geoscientific databases in the world. A multitude of financial incentives aimed at mining exploration and development implemented by the government of Quebec help to reduce the risks related to exploration.

Virginia’s Place

Virginia searches for different metals found in Quebec (Au, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Pt-Pd). The company has properties throughout the province, mainly in James Bay, the Quebec Great North, the geological province of Grenville and the Labrador Trough. Virginia ranks among the most important explorers in Eastern Canada, with a significant annual exploration budget and over twenty active projects.

Relations with Local Communities

From the beginning, Virginia made sure to establish communication procedures with First Nations communities. Virginia’s working philosophy is to keep local Cree communities fully informed including the Band Council and Chief, the Economic Development Officer, the tallyman, the CTA and any individual affected by our activities.

“Virginia Mines has an extensive history in Eeyou Istchee and has established a very good system of communication with the Cree over the years. It was suggested that this system be adopted and become the standard. This system ensures that the families, the chief and council, and the tallyman of the Cree trappers association are informed of any and all activities. This system ensures that good relations are created and maintained.”
